Celebrating 25 Years: The Constitution

The 25-year anniversary of our Constitution reminds us that it is our actions that give power to the promises and fundamental rights enshrined in this vital document.

In his 2022 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa outlined a programme of action to unite government, business, labour and communities behind the shared goal of ensuring that the constitutional rights of all South Africans are realised – leaving no one behind.

Find out more about our plans and commitments below.

Social Support

The fundamental right to social assistance guaranteed in our Constitution is vital to reducing poverty and inequality. To fulfil our constitutional obligations and ensure that no one is left behind, we continue to expand the country’s social protection system through a range of social grants, including the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant for the unemployed and informal workers.

Housing Delivery

South Africa’s Constitution protects everyone’s right to adequate housing with access to essential services such as electricity, water and sanitation. Since 1994, we have made significant progress in housing delivery. This includes setting aside well-located land and buildings for the development of housing.

Building Safer Communities

The high levels of crime and violence in South Africa threaten our constitutional right to live in safety and security. To ensure that right is protected, we are taking steps to strengthen policing and crime prevention.
